William Joseph Verdult, the “Dutch Master" as he was aptly named by the Dutch government, is one of the few living American "masters." On April 7, 1939, William was born into the havoc and desperation of wartime Holland. William was a sickly child and spent much of his youth in the hospital where, due to a bout with smallpox and a rheumatic heart condition, he had several near encounters with death. In 1950, at age 11, the Dutch American artist came to America with his family. William's family has bloodlines that go back to Dutch royalty. William is a self-taught artist who has devoted his entire life to art and has studied seriously under the "old masters" in Rome, Belgium, Holland, France, and the United States, achieving his own classical style. William achieved international fame when, after nearly two decades of painting, he released the King Tut collection which was shown at the Sahara and the Sands in Las Vegas and since then has traveled all around the world. The King Tut collection incorporated gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and other precious stones into the artwork and even back in the 1980's was valued in the tens of millions. Verdult has more awards and achievements than I have time to list including a state senate resolution honoring and recognizing him in Georgia. Verdult's prolific career spans nearly four decades and he is viewed as one of the most versatile contemporary artists in the world. The short list of collectors reads like a whose who list of the rich and famous including: Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Elvis Presley, Jack Lord, Farrah Fawcett, Telly Savalas, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Lee Majors, Alfred Hitchcock, Tom Jones, Kim Novak, Robert Redford, Connie Francis, Clint Eastwood, Red Skelton, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Gov. George Busbee and Bob Vila. Seven pieces of the Kind Tut collection are owned and displayed by the Tanglewood Resort in Texas. William Verdult is currently 67 years old, still paints and lives simply in Palm Springs, California. Meet the artist
